Session 1· 50 minutes

I Can’t Feel My Face, Because of You…But I Like It. Regional Anesthesia for the Dogs and Cats

This lecture is designed to describe common regional anesthesia techniques and benefits of regional anesthesia. The lecture will focus on the most common locations for nerve blocks for dentistry and oral surgery patients, common medications used, and issues to be aware of when considering administration of local anesthesia.

  • Understand the use of regional anesthesia in dentistry and oral surgery patients.
  • Apply regional anesthesia techniques to oral surgery procedures.
  • Recall anatomy associated with regional anesthesia techniques.

Session 2· 50 minutes

Pearls of Wisdom on Surgical Extractions in Dogs and Cats

This lecture is designed to help make dental extractions in dogs and cats easier. The lecture will discuss instruments and equipment commonly used in surgical extractions and potential indications for extractions. It will also discuss appropriate sectioning of multi-rooted teeth and the surgical technique associated with crown amputations.

  • Recognize when dental extractions in dogs and cats are appropriate.
  • Identify examples of proper equipment used for extractions.
  • Identify when crown amputations can be performed.

Session 3· 50 minutes

Oops, I did it again, complications of extractions

This lecture will describe complications that can arise when extracting teeth in dogs and cats, ways to avoid them, and techniques during the procedure to help resolve the complication. Root tip retrieval, hemorrhage and hard and soft tissue trauma to adjacent and surrounding structures will be discussed.

  • Recognize complications when they arise during surgical procedures in the oral cavity.
  • Describe techniques that can be employed to retrieve tooth roots.
  • Identify when it may be appropriate to leave a displaced tooth root.
  • List hemostatic agents that can be employed during hemorrhage in dentistry and oral surgery procedures and their mode of action.
