Neurology In A Nutshell Presented by Dr. Susan Arnold (4 Hr CE)
A 6-year-old Boxer presents with acute onset of circling and a head tilt. Is it peripheral vestibular disease — or a brainstem lesion that changes everything? Build the neurolocalization framework that separates treatable conditions from emergencies.

Practical Takeaways for Your Practice
Every session is built around cases you see in GP — leave with frameworks you can apply immediately.
Neurolocalization Framework
Apply a systematic approach to neurological examination that accurately localizes lesions and guides your diagnostic plan.
IVDD Decision-Making
Classify intervertebral disc disease by type and grade, and apply evidence-based criteria for medical vs. surgical management.
Seizure Protocols
Implement first-line and rescue anticonvulsant protocols based on current ACVIM consensus guidelines for canine and feline epilepsy.
Vestibular Triage
Differentiate peripheral from central vestibular disease using clinical signs alone, and communicate prognosis with confidence.
Course Abstract
Live Online Interactive Webinar • Case-Based • Sponsor-Free
Neurological cases in general practice demand rapid, accurate localization — and the confidence to act on it. This course equips you with a structured approach to the neuro cases you see most, grounded in current evidence.
Over four hours, Dr. Susan Arnold will walk you through systematic neurological examination, IVDD classification and surgical decision-making, evidence-based seizure management, and the critical distinction between peripheral and central vestibular disease. Each topic is anchored in cases you'll recognize from your own caseload.
Curriculum Overview
Four clinically focused lectures totaling 4.0 RACE-approved CE hours.
01. Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)
1.0 HourIVDD is the most common cause of vertebral column pain and myelopathies in dogs and also can occur in cats. Classify Hansen Type I vs. Type II disc disease, apply grading systems to guide medical vs. surgical decisions, and review current evidence on timing, prognosis, and post-operative rehabilitation.
- IVDD grading and surgical criteria
- Medical management protocols
02. Localizing, Diagnosing, and Managing Intracranial Disease
1.0 HourIntracranial neurolocalization to one of the four brain regions enables a streamlined approach to subsequent generation of differential diagnosis lists and treatment plans. Learn systematic approaches to brain tumors, encephalitis, and congenital anomalies.
- Four-region neurolocalization
- Differential diagnosis by region
03. Chronic Seizure Management
1.0 HourEpilepsy is a life-long disease that is also the most common neurological condition observed in dogs and cats. Distinguish structural, metabolic, and idiopathic epilepsy. Select appropriate first-line anticonvulsants, manage breakthrough seizures, and implement emergency status epilepticus protocols based on ACVIM consensus.
- Anticonvulsant selection & monitoring
- Status epilepticus emergency protocol
04. Vestibular Dysfunction
1.0 HourVestibular disease in dogs and cats spans from benign to serious conditions. Effective localization within the vestibular system is the first critical step in determining a patient's diagnosis. Use clinical signs to differentiate peripheral from central vestibular disease and communicate prognosis.
- Central vs. peripheral differentiation
- Prognosis communication
