Course Overview
Lecture 1: Recordkeeping: Do you know where your controlled drugs are? Learning Objectives: Explain why controlled substance recordkeeping must be a priority for veterinary practices. Identify recordkeeping strategies that will fit your specific practice setting. List pros and cons of electronic and paper drug logs. Describe how to audit controlled drug records to ensure information is accurate and complete. Description: Controlled substance recordkeeping isn't just a regulatory requirement, it's a critical safeguard for your veterinary practice. We dive into the essential "what, why, and how" of controlled drug documentation. From understanding the DEA inspection process to identifying common recordkeeping violations, this session will equip you with the knowledge and tools to stay compliant and confident. Lecture 2: Preventing Client Drug Diversion Learning Objectives: Summarize how to recognize drug-seeking clients. Describe technology used in human healthcare to decrease drug diversion and the problems with using this technology in veterinary medicine. List reasons why prescribing versus in-house dispensing may be beneficial. Description: Client drug diversion is a growing concern in veterinary medicine, and it's not always easy to spot. We will focus on the front lines of client interaction where diversion often begins. This session will help veterinary professionals recognize drug-seeking behavior, understand the tools available to mitigate risk, and make informed decisions about dispensing practices. We'll explore common tactics like vet shopping and the red flags that may indicate a client is seeking controlled substances for misuse. You'll also learn about technologies used in human healthcare, such as electronic prescribing and Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs), and the unique challenges of applying these tools in veterinary settings. Finally, we'll examine the pros and cons of in-house dispensing versus prescribing, including the legal implications of the corresponding responsibility doctrine.
