Course Overview

This comprehensive series presented by Dr. Rachel Allbaugh, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVO and Professor at Iowa State University, delivers practical approaches to common ophthalmic conditions through four focused lectures: Adnexal Issues: Covers diagnosis and management of conformational problems (entropion, ectropion, macropalpebral fissure), hair/eyelash disorders (trichiasis, distichiasis, ectopic cilia), eyelid masses, trauma repair, and third eyelid disorders. Surgical techniques and post-operative care are emphasized, including proper approach to gland prolapse and cartilage eversion. Corneal Diseases: Explores diagnosis and treatment of tear film disorders (KCS and qualitative deficiencies), corneal ulcers (simple, infected, melting, indolent), foreign bodies, and keratitis conditions. Practical medication administration techniques and proper follow-up protocols are discussed. Management strategies for both acute and chronic conditions are presented with emphasis on when to refer. Intraocular Problems: Addresses critical conditions including uveitis, glaucoma, cataracts, and lens luxation/subluxation. Features essential examination techniques, including the "30-second eye exam" that can be incorporated into every physical examination. Emergency management protocols and long-term treatment strategies are covered, with clear guidelines for specialist referral. Feline Ocular Ailments: Focuses on species-specific approaches to feline ophthalmology, including infectious conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers and sequestra, eosinophilic keratitis, uveitis, iris melanoma, and hypertensive retinopathy. Special attention is given to unique feline conditions and their management. The course features extensive clinical images and case examples, supported by current literature and evidence-based treatment protocols. Participants will gain practical skills for diagnosis and treatment while learning to recognize cases requiring specialist care. This course bridges the gap between general practice and specialist ophthalmology, providing practitioners with the tools needed for effective management of common eye conditions in both canine and feline patients.
