Vet On It

UTAH VETERINARIANS · 30-DAY REINSTATEMENT WINDOW THROUGH OCTOBER 30, 2026

23 of Utah’s 24 CE hours on demand, including the required opioid hour

Utah requires 24 CE hours per two-year cycle, and every veterinary license expires September 30 of even years. Two of those hours are fixed topics: 1 in recognizing opioid use and dependency, and 1 in workplace communication. Utah’s rule sets no cap on online or recorded hours, so one $180 enrollment covers 23 of the 24, including the opioid hour, with a RACE-numbered certificate the moment you pass each quiz.

Utah licenses not renewed by September 30 expired automatically, and practicing on an expired license is unlawful. An application filed within 30 days of expiration (through October 30) reinstates the license with the renewal fee plus a late fee; after that, a reinstatement fee applies. If you renewed on time, your 2026–2028 cycle has begun.

Utah’s two required topics

Utah requires at least 1 hour specifically on recognizing opioid use and dependency in office staff, clients, and coworkers, and at least 1 hour on communication in the veterinary workplace (clients, employees, or recruitment). Essential Controlled Substances (2 hours) covers recognizing opioid use and dependency in clients, staff, and coworkers, which meets the opioid hour. The library has no workplace communication course, so plan on a separate 1-hour course for that topic.

Pharmacy courses taught by a board-certified veterinary pharmacist

Dr. Lauren Eichstadt Forsythe, PharmD, MBA, DICVP, FSVHP (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign), teaches all three pharmacy courses. Controlled Substances meets Utah’s opioid-recognition hour.

State certified veterinary technicians: 12 hours per two-year cycle, also ending September 30 of even years, with at least 9 specific to medical practices. The opioid and communication hours are not required for technicians. Every course in this library is clinical or pharmacology, so any 12 hours meet the requirement, for example Cardio in the Real World (4), Everyday Dermatology (4), and The Eyes Have It (4).

Questions

Do on-demand hours count toward my Utah renewal?

Yes. Utah recognizes RACE-approved programs and sets no separate limit on online or recorded hours. A course without an instructor physically present must verify learning by examination; every course here ends with a quiz you must pass.

Does any course cover the opioid-recognition hour?

Yes. Essential Controlled Substances (2 hours) covers recognizing opioid use and dependency in office staff, clients, and coworkers, the topic Utah requires.

Does any course cover the communication hour?

No. The library is clinical and pharmacology content; take the communication hour separately.

Is there a grace period after September 30?

No. An unrenewed Utah license expires automatically on September 30, and continuing to practice is unlawful. Within 30 days of expiration you can reinstate with the renewal fee plus a late fee; from 31 days to 2 years, with the renewal fee plus a reinstatement fee. Either way you must show you meet the renewal requirements, including CE.

Can I use the rest of the library in my next cycle?

Yes. A course counts in the cycle you complete it, and once only. Courses stay in your library for 2026–2028.

How long does each course take?

Each course runs its listed CE hours of lecture, plus a short quiz.
