MAINE VETERINARIANS · LATE RENEWAL OPEN THROUGH DECEMBER 29, 2026

Maine’s 24 CE hours, on demand: controlled substances, antimicrobial stewardship, and 47 more RACE-approved specialist hours

Maine requires 24 CE hours in each two-year period, October 1 of an even-numbered year to September 30 of the next, reported with that year’s September 30 renewal. Chapter 4 counts RACE-approved computer-based training and sets no cap on hours in that category; up to 6 hours may be practice management. Veterinarians who prescribe benzodiazepines or opioids also need 1 hour every two years on controlled substances. One $180 enrollment opens 18 RACE-approved courses, with a RACE-numbered certificate the moment you pass each quiz.

The 2024–2026 period closed September 30, and Maine licenses expired that day. Late renewal is open for 90 days, through December 29, with a $50 late fee. The license is reissued as of the late-renewal date, and you are considered unlicensed from expiration until then. Chapter 4 counts hours completed during the period that ended September 30.

Controlled substances and pharmacy, taught by a board-certified veterinary pharmacist

Dr. Lauren Eichstadt Forsythe, PharmD, MBA, DICVP, FSVHP (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign), teaches all three pharmacy courses. Maine veterinarians who dispense benzodiazepines or opioids are subject to the state’s Prescription Monitoring Program, and those who prescribe them must prescribe electronically when they have the capability (32 M.R.S. §4878).

Questions

Do on-demand hours count toward my Maine renewal?

Chapter 4 counts RACE-approved computer-based training related to veterinary practice and sets no cap on those hours. Every course here is RACE-approved for on-demand delivery and ends with a graded quiz. For the full text, see Board rule Chapter 4 and 32 M.R.S. §4878.

Is there a live-hour minimum?

No. Chapter 4 sets no live minimum. Vet On It’s live webinars run in real time; the next is Feline Ophthalmology on Friday, October 9 at 1:00 PM CT, which falls in the 2026–2028 period.

Does Controlled Substances meet the prescriber hour in 32 M.R.S. §4878?

The statute requires 1 hour every two years on the administration, prescription and management of controlled substances, including benzodiazepine and opioid medications, for veterinarians who prescribe them. Essential Controlled Substances (2 hours) covers that topic, including opioid and benzodiazepine medications, along with DEA compliance, recordkeeping, diversion prevention, PDMPs, and e-prescribing.

Can I use the rest of the library in my next period?

Yes. Hours count in the period you complete them, and once only. Courses stay in your library, and the 2026–2028 period runs October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2028.

How long does each course take?

Each course runs its listed CE hours of lecture, plus a short quiz.
